Fresh analysis indicates that people who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users buying such medications should be cognizant of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to original weight in about a year and a half.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually see a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Experts suggest the mode of action of the jabs explains the amplified weight return.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
A Chronic Disease?
The NHS advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a powerful return of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you're instantly starving," said one woman.
This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
