British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, identified by intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a series of entry passages down to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation underscores the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State after its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their courage," Healey said. "Including them were numerous UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to remove militants who endanger our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."

During December, the American forces executed what it described as a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN estimates IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
